We ‘re all blind to things..all of us. But Jesus utilizes those kinds of things to teach us life lessons. In the story in John’s gospel, Jesus notices a blind man. The disciples notice that Jesus notices the blind man. Wanting to sound intelligent they ask what they believe to be an obvious question. Who sinned to cause the blindness? But like he did so often before Jesus basically says, “You’ve heard it said… but now I tell you.” No one sinned. This man was simply born blind.
And as we’ll find out in a few minutes, the story goes on to point out again, that many of us are blind; blinded by attitudes, by experiences, by believing we’re right and therefore others are wrong. Sometimes we believe we’re all powerful, or all knowing, or…and the list goes on. There are many kinds of things that blind us, and so it was in the days of Jesus. But blindness, according to Jesus, can be overcome, at least some types. It takes the actions of this savior to help us understand what it takes to be helped, and maybe even healed. To prepare please read from John’s gospel, chapter 9 and verses 1 – 12.
